Human Annotation Tool

To end up with more reliable results, which are necessary because the analysed information directly influences the setup of the show, a manual annotation step complements the automatic analysis, above. The sense of this step is twofold. To complete a semi-automatic annotation process the detected information is acknowledged or corrected on one hand. On the other hand an online annotation tool allows for further and parallel enrichment of the automatically detected information in real-time. This manual step is done with the help of the Human Annotation Tool. Hereby the focus lays on the enrichment of incoming audiovisual material with as much information as possible with the shortest possible delay. Therefore it (i) enables the user to act extremely fast (ii) is as simple as possible to operate, and (iii) can be used to handle live streamed data.

The automatic metadata generation system marks sports events that trigger actions that need to be performed using the Human Annotation Tool, i.e. to acknowledge or to categorise the incoming information by assigning terms to it later. The categorisation is done by the means of formal methods to be able to process the information automatically in subsequent indexing steps. The Human Annotation Tool therefore uses (i) a controlled vocabulary, (ii) a standardised common metadata model, and (iii) also supports free text annotations, if the controlled vocabulary is missing a term in order to enhance the controlled vocabulary with new terms. The use of a controlled vocabulary in the Human Annotation Tool avoids typing errors, fosters consistency and allows for machine process-ability of the annotations. The Human Annotation Tool imports all relevant terms before a live event starts and presents them in a user-friendly manner. The use of this information in the tool is depicted here: The interface includes a collection of click able buttons, which might include a starter list (Who?), adapted action terms for the type of event (What?) or geographical places around the event’s venue (Where?).
