Tobias Bürger

Tobias Bürger is employed as research assistant and project manager at Salzburg Research in the field of digital media and part of the mobile and web based information systems group. From 11/1998 – 04/2004 Tobias Bürger studied computer science at the University of Passau / Germany. During his studies he gained expertise in the field of information systems and knowledge engineering as he, among other things, worked as a helping research assistant at the Institute for Software Systems and IT at the University of Passau. His major interests lie in the fields of multimedia analysis, information retrieval and the Semantic Web. Since 2004 he is or was involved in numerous projects dealing with multimedia analysis, information retrieval and the Semantic Web. In early 2006 he started his PhD thesis at the University of Innsbruck which is placed somewhere in between the fields of Semantic Web - and multimedia technology research and which is supervised by Dieter Fensel (DERI) and Siegfried Reich (Salzburg Research). Since the beginning of 2006 he also has a part-time-position at DERI (University of Innsbruck), where he works in projects covering topics of his PhD. Stamatia Dasiopoulou

Stamatia Dasiopoulou received her degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, Technical University of Crete, Greece in 2003. She is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and as a research associate, with the Multimedia Knowledge Group, Informatics and Telematics Institute, Thessaloniki, Greece. Her research interests include knowledge-driven semantic multimedia analysis and retrieval, DLs and SW technologies, reasoning in multimedia understanding, and MPEG-7. She has been involved in a number of European and national research projects including the IST IP aceMedia, the IST Network of Excellences KnowledgeWeb and K-Space, the IST Strep BOEMIE, and the Greek national project REACH, while she is participating in the W3C Multimedia Semantics Incubator Group. Her publications include 5 articles in international journals and books and 10 articles in international conferences.

Christian Eckes

Christian Eckes is a senior researcher and project manager working the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) in the area of multimedia analysis. His research interests include human-computer interaction, multimedia analysis, pattern recognition and biological inspired computer vision. He received the diploma degree in Physics from the University of Dortmund in 1995. From 1996 to 2000 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Neural Computation at the Ruhr-University Bochum and, as a visiting scholar, at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, U.S.A., respectively. In 2001 he joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) working on MPEG-7 and multimodal information systems. He has worked in various national and international research projects, e.g. ICEROUTES, VIRTUAL HUMAN, AGMA, NEUROS and ELECTRONIC EYE. Since Mid 2006, he leads the research activities in the IST-project LIVE dealing with detection, extraction and annotation of knowledge.

Georg Guentner

Georg Güntner holds a degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Vienna since 1985. After 13 years in the software industry, during which he held managing positions in the software development and product management, he joined Salzburg’s ICT research organisation in 1998 and was responsible for the initiation of a network for applied research in the area of digital media technologies. Since 2000 he has been managing the application area “Digital Media” at Salzburg Research, the research organisation of the province of Salzburg (Austria). Mr. Güntner was involved in and leading a number of national and international research projects, e.g. COVAX, REGNET, CULTOS and LIVE. Since October 2003, Mr. Güntner is managing director of a centre of excellence in the area of digital content engineering research (Salzburg NewMediaLab) and conducted one of its lead projects, Smart Content Factory, dealing with knowledge based multimedia asset management technologies. Since January 2006 Georg Güntner is involved in the integrated project LIVE, dealing with the development of novel non-linear interactive TV-content formats and co-ordinates the scientific and technological board of this project. Stavros J. Perantonis

Stavros J. Perantonis is a senior researcher at NCSR “Demokritos” and head of CIL. He is the holder of a BS degree in Physics from the Department of Physics, University of Athens, an M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool and a D. Phil. Degree in Computational Physics from the Department of Physics, University of Oxford. His current technical and research activities are in the areas of computational intelligence, pattern recognition and multimedia processing. Dr. Perantonis is the author or co-author of over 130 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has managed or participated in many EU or nationally funded projects, mainly involving research into computational intelligence methods, multimedia visual information processing and retrieval and their application to industrial, business, bio-medical and environmental applications.

Vassilis Tzouvaras

Dr. Vassilis Tzouvaras has received the Bachelor of engineering degree (B-Eng) in the department of electronic and systems engineering of Essex University in UK. He received the Master of engineering degree (M-Eng) in the department of automatic control and systems engineering of Sheffield University in UK. He finished the Ph.D. in 2005 in Image Video and Multimedia systems Laboratory (IVML) of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and now is working as a research scientist in IVML-NTUA. His research interest includes semantic interoperability, knowledge representation languages, extension of logic formalism with fuzzy logic operators, semantic web technologies, multimedia retrieval and neurofuzzy systems. He has been involved in 8 R&D European IST projects including Acemedia, Kspace, Xmedia, Boemie, KnowledgeWeb and in 5 National projects. Also, he participates in the W3C Multimedia Semantics Incubator Group. Finally, he has published 7 articles in international journals and books and 30 in international conferences.

Janez Zaletelj

Dr. Janez Zaletelj is working at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, as a researcher and project manager. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the Faculty of electrical engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1997 and 2000. He received a PhD degree from the University of Ljubljana in the field of digital image processing in 2005. From 1998 to 1999 he worked as a visiting researcher at the Information Theory Group, Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands. Since 1999 he has been with the Digital Signal Processing Lab at the University of Ljubljana, where he is working on research projects under FP5 and FP6 programmes. Since 2006 he is leading research activities in the IST-project LIVE dealing with personalised content selection and consumer feedback analysis. His research interests include object-based video coding, object recognition, visual surveillance and personalised multimedia services.
