Technical Integration
The main objective of this work area is actually twofold:
  • Integration of the individual component technologies into one coherent system, and
  • Interfacing of the overall LIVE production support system to the broadcaster's environment.
Broadcasters are keen to utilise their production equipment for rather long periods. At the same time, they expect the technical feasability to gradually substitute out-dated technologies by more advanced successors component-wise. It is a challenge to design the LIVE system in a way that allows its individual components as well as the surrounding technology to gradually change and evolve.

This challenge gets even more interesting in a world where previously disparate technologies are converging at high speed: the border between purely TV related technologies on the one hand, computers and data networks on the other gets fuzzier each day, in effect yielding a lot more options when selecting from available base technologies.

  Research Focus

The research focus lies on the investigation and analysis of existing and evolving technologies with relevance to the LIVE project, in particular from the broadcast domain, but also from general software engineering.

  • Which of the existing distribution systems for interactive TV, e.g. DVB/MHP, DVB-H, IPTV, are suitable within the LIVE project?
  • Which of the evolving interactive TV environments (e.g. MHP, IPTV, DVB-H) will be available and propagated? What kind of functionality is provided by their back channel?
  • Which frameworks and architectural principles are best suited to allow for integration into existing environments as well as gradual evolution?
  • How to design a system aimed to be long-lived as well as prepared for change with respect to its environment and underlying base technology.

Expected Results

  • Analysis and design of a broadcasting and interactive TV environment suitable for use in the LIVE usage scenario.
  • Prototypes of the overall production support system
